What should companies do when they find human or labour rights violations in their subcontracting chain?
Companies that genuinely care about basic human or labour rights and their image in this respect, are sometimes tempted to just cut and run, i.e. to end all trade contracts with the supplier in question. The CCC's position is that this will not solve anything. Rather, as a result, workers will lose jobs and the existing violations will continue. Worse still, garment workers may feel that a code of conduct is a potential threat to their livelihoods. In such situations, a company has a responsibility to work out an improvement plan with local and international NGOs, trade-unions and international organisations to remedy the situation.
