What's in the CCC Model Code?
The CCC model code has different sections. It is called Code
of Labour Practices for the Apparel Industry Including Sportswear
and you can find it at www.cleanclothes.org/codes/ccccode.htm.
-
Section one sets out everything that the code is not intended
to be. That list is quite long, and it appears first because
it was considered essential to make clear that codes are not,
for example, meant to replace collective bargaining, or national
legislation, and should not be implemented only among the
first tier of subcontractors. The list grew during the process
of drafting, as more and more companies started to adopt their
own codes as a means of fighting public criticism.
-
The second section of the model code lists the labour standards,
the five basic conventions plus provisions on hours of work,
living wage, health and safety, and job security. Today there
is a high level of consensus among unions that these are the
demands to make, and that company codes (and others) not mentioning
these fall short of the mark.
-
The third part of the model code lists what a company must
do to implement the code. For example, they must translate
it into local languages and distribute it to workers. Though
less talked about, implementation is as crucial as independent
monitoring.
-
The fourth section lists principles for independent verification.
