Aug. 10,
2006Call for
nominations "'Public Eye" awards 2007
Scheme Berne Declaration
(CCC Switzerland)
With
the conferring of the Public Eye Awards
in 2006, the tradition continues. Once again the
Berne Declaration and Pro Natura - Friends of
the Earth Switzerland effectively reminded corporate
bosses at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos
of their social and ecological responsibilities.
As in the past, our awards of disrepute
attracted considerable media attention and provoked
corresponding reactions from the award-winning
corporations. These facts demonstrate that the
issue of corporate accountability continues to
gain in importance on the public agenda.

start this September, is one of the demands that
the CCC and Bangladeshi partners have been making
of garment companies sourcing from the factory
since its collapse.

around the World Cup 2006
With the FIFA World Cup 2006 taking place in Germany,
the CCC took the lead in organizing a number of

annual stakeholders meeting. Dressed in red and
with the slogan "Ich bin rot vor Wut!"
(I am red of anger), protesters loudly draw attention
to the poor working conditions at factories that
supply Adidas.

2005 - Release
and sentence reductions for Stella shoe factory
workers in China
At a criminal appeal court hearing on 31 December
2004, seven Chinese shoe factory workers walked
free in the southern city of Dongguan, Guangdong
Province, after their original sentences of
up to three-and-a-half years' imprisonment
were reduced to nine-months, suspended for
one year. Three under-aged workers were also
released and their original suspended prison
sentences dropped. They had all been in jail
since April 2004.
This reversal of the sentencing of the Stella
International shoe factory workers - all of
whom had been involved in mass protests at
Stella's Xing Xiong and Xing Ang factories
in late April 2004 - represents a significant
landmark in the history of the modern labour
movement in China.

Public Eye on Davos Awards
Every year in January, the World
Economic Forum (WEF) gathers together
its business leaders and the political

global political issues and set trends
in the future development of global business.

Public Eye on Davos" has been present
at the same time as the WEF in Davos/Switzerland
since 2000, to critically monitor and
to challenge their activities at an alternative
event.
Next January, the Berne Declaration and
Pro Natura - Friends of the Earth Switzerland
together with other NGOs will be hosting
another"Public Eye" event. The
highlight will be the award ceremony,
which will be held on the evening of 25
January 2005 in Davos. Candidates for
the awards are companies who have excelled
in socially and environmentally irresponsible
behaviour. We are inviting you to nominate
potential award winners.

Return - a 'sweat-free' garment operation
in Thailand
'Dignity Return' is a clothing label
still on the fringe of Thailand's sprawling
world of garment factories, where globally
known brands like Nike and Levis dominate.
But it represents hope - and more -
for the Thais churning out T-shirts
and headbands bearing the stamp of this
new label.
