July 8, 2008DGZ Migrant Worker Centre ReopensWe are pleased to report that the Dagongzhe (DGZ) Migrant Worker Centre in Shenzhen, China has re-opened and that its founder, Huang Qing-nan, has partially recovered and resumed work. Thank you for taking action! Huang Qing-nan was brutally attacked by two unidentified men late last year. The attack was intended to put a stop to his efforts to raise awareness about China’s new Labour Contract Law, which requires better employment conditions for workers. The Centre offers labour dispute consultation and services to workers.

Read more of this article Jan29, 2008FFI- 'CASE CLOSED'Atthe beginning of 2008, Clean Clothes Campaignand India Committee of the Netherlands (CCCand ICN), and Fiber & Fabrics Internationalalong with its subsidiary Jeans Knit PrivateLimited (FFI/JKPL), have resolved their differencesas to labour conditions at the Indian clothingproduction facilities of FFI/JKPL. In consultation with local organisations andunions in Bangalore, an Ombudsperson in Bangalorewill be appointed to resolve future problems.Should employees, local organisations, CCCor ICN have any complaints concerning labourconditions, they can submit these to the Ombudsperson,who will attempt to resolve them. Employeeswill be free to organise themselves in a unionof their choice. On the basis of this agreement,CCC and ICN are confident that any violationsof labour rights will be reported in a timelyfashion and will be resolved in a correctmanner. Parties therefore no longer requirethe courts to provide judgement on the differenceof opinion as to the allegations put forwardby local Indian organisations, and disputedby FFI/JKPL, as to events lying in the past(2005/2006). Therefore, the Indian companywithdraws all legal proceedings, and CCC andICN bring to an end all campaigns againstFFI/JKPL and the Dutch jeans brand G-Star.CCC and ICN applaud the fact that G-Star,as the most important former client of FFI/JKPLrestores their commercial relationship withFFI/JKPL."

At the occurrence of the Turin Olympics,the Clean Clothes Campaign published anupdate on the steps being taken by the brands,the World Federation of Sporting Goods Industriesand the Olympic family since the AthensOlympics.

Canadian T-shirt company still mustaddress El Progreso Rights Violations

On December 10, theFair Labor Association (FLA) Boardof Directors announced it was reinstatingCanadian T-shirt manufacturer GildanActivewear as an FLA ParticipatingCompany. Gildan’s membershiphad been challenged due to failureto comply with good labor standardsat its El Progreso facility in Honduras.Gildan was threatened with terminationof its FLA membership unless it tookspecific action, set out in an Oct.26 resolution from the FLA. Accordingto the FLA’s statement, Gildanhas taken “substantial steps… to meet the conditions specifiedby the FLA Board in its Resolutionof October 26, 2004.”

Gildan still has alot of work to do to address the rightsviolations at El Progreso and to ensurethat workers at all Gildan supplyfacilities are able to exercise theirrights. The CCC will continue to monitordevelopments in this case and willpost a request for action should additionalpressure on Gildan be needed.

TheSaipan workers' lawsuit

In January 1999 three separate lawsuitswere filed challenging the unlawfulsweatshop conditions in the Saipan,CNMI garment industry. A total of26 U.S. based retailers and manufacturerson the island were sued for violatingworkers' rights and using "indenturedslavery".
