July 8, 2008 DGZ Migrant Worker Centre Reopens We are pleased to report that the Dagongzhe (DGZ) Migrant Worker Centre in Shenzhen, China has re-opened and that its founder, Huang Qing-nan, has partially recovered and resumed work. Thank you for taking action! Solidarity demonstration, Hong Kong, 3 December 2007

Huang Qing-nan was brutally attacked by two unidentified men late last year. The attack was intended to put a stop to his efforts to raise awareness about China’s new Labour Contract Law, which requires better employment conditions for workers. The Centre offers labour dispute consultation and services to workers.

The DGZ Centre has recently relocated and its operations are returning to normal. The Centre, along with labour rights NGO Worker Empowerment, recently concluded a research report on the Labour Contract Law featuring in-depth interviews of Shenzhen workers. The report was sent to government bodies and other interested parties together with the response to the open consultation of Labour Contract Law Implementation Ordinance. An English version will be released soon.
